Background of the Study
Vocational skills training has emerged as a crucial strategy for enhancing youth economic independence in Ede South. With high youth unemployment and the evolving demands of the labor market, vocational programs offer practical training in technical, artisanal, and entrepreneurial skills (Oluwaseun, 2023). These programs are designed to equip young people with market-relevant skills that increase their employability and foster self-reliance. Evidence suggests that vocational training can lead to improved income generation, reduced dependence on formal employment, and enhanced community development (Akinola, 2024). Despite these benefits, challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, limited funding, and mismatches between training curricula and market needs persist (Femi, 2025). This study critically appraises the effect of vocational skills training on youth economic independence by examining program implementation, outcomes, and barriers to success in Ede South. The analysis considers socio-economic factors and policy frameworks that either support or hinder effective skill acquisition, with the aim of providing recommendations to enhance the impact of vocational training initiatives.
Statement of the Problem
In Ede South, youth face significant economic challenges due to high unemployment and insufficient skill sets required for the modern job market. Although vocational skills training programs exist, their effectiveness in promoting economic independence remains questionable (Oluwaseun, 2023). Issues such as inadequate training facilities, outdated curricula, and insufficient linkage with job markets hamper the potential of these programs (Akinola, 2024). Consequently, many youths remain underemployed or dependent on informal income sources. This study seeks to identify the gaps and propose improvements to enhance vocational training outcomes (Femi, 2025).
Objectives of the Study:

Research Questions:
How effective are vocational training programs in promoting youth economic independence?

Research Hypotheses:
H₁: Vocational skills training significantly improves youth economic independence.
H₂: Inadequate training infrastructure negatively affects program outcomes.
H₃: Curriculum modernization leads to better employment prospects for youth.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the role of vocational skills training in promoting youth economic independence in Ede South. The findings will guide educational policymakers and training institutions in optimizing programs to reduce youth unemployment and enhance economic resilience. It contributes to the discourse on skill development and sustainable youth empowerment (Oluwaseun, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to vocational skills training programs in Ede South Local Government Area, focusing solely on their impact on youth economic independence without extending to other educational interventions.
